Carlos Chirinos is a Venezuelan-American journalist and media leader with over 25 years of experience in the coverage of US politics and international news while navigating the digital transformation of the newsroom. He most recently served as Senior Political Editor for Univision Noticias, where he directed the network's multi-platform political coverage and served as a lead analyst.
In the field of media integrity, Chirinos was director of ‘elDetector’ de Univision Noticias, the first Spanish-language fact-checking platform in the United States and a certified member of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the Poynter Institute, establishing a benchmark for combating misinformation among Hispanic audiences.
Prior to Univision, Chirinos spent 15 years at the BBC World Service, where he held various editorial roles while navigating the evolution of traditional media to multimedia digital newsrooms. He helped in the BBC’s digital transformation, crafting strategies that integrated the emerging platforms with traditional broadcasting. His extensive field experience includes serving as a correspondent in Washington, D.C., and Caracas, and as a presenter for the BBC's global Spanish-language radio programs in London, covering major geopolitical events across the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East.
Chirinos has been honored with multiple awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for excellence in digital journalism. He has taken part as speaker in many events dealing with media ethics and the impact of technology on news reporting, having collaborated with formation programs of the World Bank, Red Cross, and Latin American universities.
He is a recipient of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship.
