CMIA Alumni shine in humanitarian journalism

We are delighted to share the news that esteemed CMIA Seminar alumnus Pedro Borges has won the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) International Humanitarian Coverage Award for his outstanding reporting from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

His winning work, published by Alma Preta and Revista Piauí, was recognized by the ICRC for offering a powerful and deeply reported portrait of the humanitarian, political, and social crisis in eastern Congo—a region that has endured decades of armed conflict and displacement.

We are equally thrilled that Claudia Jardim, also a CMIA Seminar alumna, played an important role in this year’s award process as Communications Coordinator for the ICRC in Brazil and a member of the award jury. Seeing two CMIA alumni contributing to humanitarian journalism from different perspectives—through exceptional reporting and through the recognition of outstanding journalism—is especially meaningful.

This is a remarkable celebration of journalism that brings overlooked humanitarian crises to global attention and highlights the importance of rigorous, compassionate reporting. We couldn’t be happier to see Pedro’s work receive this well-deserved international honor.
