CMIA Advisory Board Member, Sebastian Rotella from ProPublica, and the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Pedro Vaca, discussed with exiled Nicaraguan journalists the absence of press freedom under the Ortega regime.
On February 9th, 2023, Nicaragua suddenly expelled 222 political prisoners among whom were a number of journalists. Members of this cohort were summarily exiled and stripped of their citizenship. Upon arrival in Washington, DC, the Center and Pedro Vaca invited them to a dialogue at the OAS. These brave media professionals detailed the horrific conditions they endured while in captivity, and spoke of their commitment to informing Nicaraguans and the world about the horrors of the Ortega dictatorship.
