On September 19, 2022, the first public event organized by the CMIA, “Exiled but Not Silenced, Journalism Under Siege” took take place in the Hall of the Americas at the Organization of American States.

The event was attended by members of the Washington-based Latin American and Caribbean diplomatic core, Congressional Staff, academics, and think tank organizations, as well as members of the press. Moderated by the Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Pedro Vaca, the dialogue included: Mónica Baró from Cuba, Carlos Fernando Chamorro from Nicaragua, Boris Muñoz and Luz Mely Reyes from Venezuela, all of whom have had to leave their countries of origin due to pressure from repressive governments.

Participants and attendees came to a deeper understanding of the hurdles faced by journalists in countries where leaders actively attack the media and restrict press freedom. The conference also highlighted the importance of supporting journalists who have left their countries but remain committed to working in journalism from abroad.
