The Center for Media Integrity of the Americas, represented by our dear friend and advisor, José Luis Sanz, gave a speech on the importance of journalism for a healthy and functional democracy at the 2023 Commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS).
"There is no democracy without an informed people and with the necessary information that only a free press can provide."
In his remarks, José Luis emphasized the importance of defending journalists and their important work against violence, pressure, intimidation, or other manipulation by governments, corporate interests, or organized crime forces.
The event was co-hosted by the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro and the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Pedro Vaca - also a advisor and founder of the CMIA.
This commemoration is at the centerpiece of everything the CMIA stands for and we thank the OAS and the RELE for the opportunity to bring this important topic to the public.
